Litmus Test Poll in Thailand
Posted on 25 July 2010

Recently, a litmus test poll was conducted in a Bangkok suburb in Thailand as residents voted in support of either the government or the opposition. The election poll comes after the violent mass rallies in the Thai capital. The poll was part of the parliamentary by-election in the northern suburbs of Bangkok. The major contenders in the election included an elite member of the ruling party who faced off against a leader of the "Red Shirt" anti government movement. The Red Shirt leader is currently detained on charges of terrorism. Organizers of the election expected it to run smoothly. Two months before, the Red Shirts conducted a rally in the middle of Bangkok streets, which was broken up by the Thai army.
