Election Polls in Burma After Twenty Years
Posted on 07 November 2010

After twenty years without elections, Burma held its first election polls but the event faced plenty of criticism and controversy. Some from the international community and people from within Burma have argued that the military junta have abused the polls on a widespread scale. The tensions over the polls have led to increased security measures in target locations throughout the country.
The opposition parties and activists have critcised the Union Election Commission (EC) for overlooking the reported abuses, which involve forced and unfair advance votes. In addition, the opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi of the National League for Democracy remains detained. She also has denounced the elections as undemocratic. Suu Kyi has boycotted the polls as a sign of her disagreement with them.
